A police officer fired a warning shot into the air in the early hours of yesterday to stop a man from attacking his former girlfriend with a cleaver in the street, the Public Security Police (PSP) said in a statement yesterday.
The statement identified the suspect as a 30-year-old local man surnamed Lao.
According to the statement, the woman called the police shortly after 4 a.m. yesterday saying that she was being harassed by a man – Lao. When police officers arrived at the scene in Rua de S. José, Lao was quarrelling with the woman outside a residential building in the street, threatening her with a cleaver, the statement said.
