Several exhibitions are being held as part of 10 Fantasia’s annual Picture Book Festival at the gallery on Calçada da Igreja de S. Lázaro (瘋堂斜巷) until Sunday.
Among them, “K-liens’ Mystery of Happiness” sees a total of 16 paintings and sketches in Room A on the first floor of the venue, with its “K-liens” bringing exhibitiongoers along as they embark on the search for the elements of happiness.
The characters come from a picture book written by children’s literature author Lydia Leong (楊穎虹) and illustrated by Wan Ieng Meng, both of whom are from Macau. Happiness, meanwhile, serves as its core theme.
Those visiting will have a chance to get acquainted with the works through a reading area featuring physical copies of the picture books, which, according to a statement from the gallery, aims to encourage parent-child reading. A wall display also urges members of the public to show fragments of happiness from their lives through either drawing or by jotting them down, the statement said.
Beyond this exhibition, one can explore the other showcases like the festival’s main exhibition, “ANGEL’s Promise” by Guangdong-born artist Lego Liang* (梁賀) on the second floor, along with other picture book exhibitions that shine a light on important messages tackling topics ranging from finding one’s true self, the value of respect, to awareness of autism. Each room offers not only a style and voice unique to each creator, but a message that might prove impactful to viewers young and old.
Meanwhile, aside from the exhibitions, the picture book festival also recently presented a series of activities, including those geared towards parents and children with topics such as managing emotions through the power of picture books, a discussion and art session, and a reading carnival and market that was held across two weekends.
With six days left to go, one can visit the exhibition, along with the other concurrent showcases, until Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
