A 35-year-old man from the mainland has been arrested for owning 80 counterfeit HK$1,000 banknotes and attempting to buy casino chips with one of them, a Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesperson said during a special press conference yesterday.
According to the spokesperson, a staff member of a casino in Cotai reported on Wednesday afternoon that the suspect, surnamed Wang, tried to use a bogus HK$1,000 banknote among 699 real ones to buy casino chips.
After further investigation, said the spokesperson, the police found that Wang was an illegal money changer at the casino. On Wednesday, Wang exchanged yuan into Hong Kong dollars for a gambler, after which the gambler asked him to buy casino chips for him.
