Lawmaker Agnes Lam Iok Fong said in a statement yesterday that she will assist in appealing a decision by the Health Bureau (SSM) which has refused to grant financial aid to a victim of severe domestic violence so that she can undergo specialist surgery outside Macau to restore her eyesight.
In last July’s incident, the victim’s husband poured cooking oil and drain cleaner over her, causing severe burns to her body and resulting in a total loss of sight.
Lam and the Good Shepherd Centre jointly held a press conference on Friday to call for donations to help fund the operation known as osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP) outside Macau to restore the victim’s eyesight. The press conference also urged the Health Bureau to help fund the operation in an overseas hospital.
The Health Bureau said in a statement on Friday night that its medical board which decides on local patients’ treatment outside Macau had decided against funding the victim’s osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis overseas.
