A 62-year-old woman died from influenza yesterday morning, the third person to die from the flu this year, the Health Bureau (SSM) said in a statement.
According to the statement, the woman experienced a high temperature and cough on May 17. She went to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre on May 19 and was immediately given Tamiflu after a rapid diagnostic test was positive for influenza B. She was hospitalised after chest X-rays showed she had double pneumonia.
The statement said that on May 20 the woman went into septic shock and was put on a ventilator as she suffered respiratory failure. The woman was transferred to the ICU in the early hours of May 21 and died yesterday morning.
