The police arrested a tourist from the mainland on Sunday at the local airport for carrying bullets, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Choi Iok Kin said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Choi said the 53-year-old suspect is surnamed Lin. He told the police that he is a businessman.

According to Choi, the incident was reported by the airport’s security guards on Sunday.

Lin was about to depart from the local airport to Phnom Penh in Cambodia that day. When he was going through the airport’s security check, security guards spotted suspicious items in his hand luggage. The airport security called the police for help.

PSP officers arrived at the scene and found out nine 7.62 calibre bullets in the suitcase. Lin told the police that the suitcase belonged to a friend of his wife. Lin said his wife borrowed the suitcase from her friend and that he used it for his trip to Macau.

Lin insisted that the bullets did not belong to him. He told the police that he did not check the suitcase before he travelled with it to Macau, Choi added.

According to Choi, a ballistic examination by the police showed that they were all live bullets.

The police have transferred Lin to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) for further investigation. Lin faces possible arraignment on possession of illegal weapons.

According to Article 262 of the Macau Penal Code, possessing illegal weapons is punishable by between two and eight years’ imprisonment.
