Transport Bureau (DSAT) Director Kelvin Lam Hin San said yesterday that the government plans to move several of the about 40 public bus routes that currently use the open-air bus terminal in Praça de Ferreira do Amaral – colloquially known in Cantonese simply as “A Ma La” – to its underground space, with the aim of reducing the number of public buses using the extremely busy bus terminal, adding that the plan would involve the redevelopment of the underground space.

The transport chief added that the planned redevelopment would not entail a big change to the underground space, considering that the current design and structure of the underground space was “complicated”, and a major change would have a “considerable” impact on the bus operation in the square.

Lam also said that the redevelopment plan of the square was merely a preliminary idea and that his bureau aimed to come up with a draft design plan by the end of this year.
