The police arrested a man on Wednesday for running a job referral scam last year, in which he cheated about 200 mainlanders out of 720,000 yuan, a Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesperson said yesterday.

Speaking during a special press briefing, the spokesperson said the owner of a job agency in Jiangmen reported the case to the police last Friday.

According to the spokesperson, the suspect told the owner in the latter half of last year that the construction site where he was working was looking to hire about 200 non-local workers. He asked the owner if he could find any mainlanders interested in taking up the vacancies. The suspect also claimed that for each person a 4,000 yuan “referral fee” was required.
