Local Portuguese bank BNU today donated 100,000 (US$12,500) to The Women's General Association of Macau (commonly known as Fu Luen, its name in Cantonese) in response to the COVID-19 crisis.
According to a statement by Macau's oldest existing bank, the donation presentation ceremony was held at the BNU headquarters in the city centre today in the presence of BNU Executive Directors Sam Tou and Ieong Kim Man, Fu Luen President Ho Teng Iat and other senior representatives from the bank and the association.
Fu Luen was set up in 1950 as a non-profit social organisation to provide assistance and promote solidarity, education and development concerning women and children, and protecting their rights and interests, the statement said.
According to the statement, "BNU will continue to pursue its social responsibility by supporting local organisations in the fight against COVID-19, as well as implementing other measures that aim to help individuals and small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Macau in this challenging period."
BNU, established in Lisbon in 1864, opened its Macau branch in 1902. It merged with Portugal's government-owned CGD bank in 2001.
BNU is one of Macau's two note-issuing banks, alongside the local branch of Bank of China (BOC).
