A survey conducted by Oxfam Hong Kong’s Macau Office showed that 80.3 percent of the respondents said they were willing to buy fair trade products – but only 8.8 percent had actually bought such products, while 68.9 percent said they had never heard of the concept until they were told about it during the survey.

The survey’s findings were released yesterday during a press conference at the local Oxfam office in Nape. Alfred Choy Man Kit, the organisation’s programme manager in Macau, said that it was not easy to find such products in local stores and choices for fair trade products were very limited in the city.

According to the Fairtrade International (FLO) website, which is headquartered in Bonn, fair trade is an alternative approach to conventional trade and is based on a partnership between producers and consumers.”When farmers can sell on fair trade terms, it provides them with a better deal and improved terms of trade,” the website says.
