Macau should focus on its conference and incentive travel industries rather than the exhibition industry, Hazel Xu Yueying, a member of the government-appointed Committee for the Development of Conventions and Exhibitions, said yesterday.

Xu, an associate professor at the Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT), made the remarks during a consultation session on the draft of the government’s first Five-Year Development Plan for advisory body members under Secretary for Economy and Finance Lionel Leong Vai Tac’s portfolio, at the Tourism Activities Centre (CAT) in Nape. The government is carrying out a two-month public consultation on the draft plan until the end of June.

Xu said Macau “did not have a solid foundation” to develop its exhibition industry, adding that the city had already “much more” exhibition space than it needed.
