Secretary for Economy and Finance Lionel Leong Vai Tac said yesterday the government will check whether local junket operators breach the law when transferring telephone bets to their VIP rooms operating outside the city.

The policy secretary also said the government’s clear stance was that telephone betting in local casinos is illegal.

Leong made the remarks after attending a Q&A session in the legislature’s hemicycle when asked by reporters about a recent online message by local junket operator Guangdong Group which said that since the Gaming Inspection and Co-ordination Bureau (DICJ) has recently banned phone betting in all the city’s VIP rooms, if any of its clients want to make wagers over the phone it could assist them in connecting to its VIP room in the Philippines to place bets.
