The Macau Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM) held the 4th Greater Bay Area Tourism Research Alliance Forum on Friday in the conference room of IFTM’s Educational Hotel Pousada de Mong-Há, according to a statement by the higher education institution earlier this week.

The statement noted that the forum was organised by IFTM with the support of the School of Tourism Management at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangdong and the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, which together established the Greater Bay Area Tourism Research Alliance in November 2018. The event was held in a “hybrid format” with on-site speakers as well as others who made presentations through livestreaming, adding that participants were able to attend in person or online, the statement added.

The statement underlined that the event’s main theme was “Effective Governance & Coordination for Post-COVID Greater Bay Area Tourism”, bringing together scholars, government officials and professionals from the GBA and to further discuss the latest tourism research.

The institute and the China Tourism Academy, a Beijing-based research institution, signed a partnership agreement to improve strategic cooperation and knowledge sharing, which “envisions joint development of tourism research, collaboration in hosting conferences and seminars, and the promotion of personnel exchanges”, the statement highlighted.

The statement also pointed out that the latest research by IFTM academics was featured at the forum. The statement underlined two presentations jointly produced by scholars Penny Wan Yim King, Li Xiangping and Virginia Lau Meng Chan, which were a discussion of the role of public-private cooperation in Macau’s post-COVID-19 tourism recovery, and the development of a tourism-focused satisfaction index for the Greater Bay Area. IFTM’s Cindia Lam Ching Chi and Prof. Zhao Ying from Sun Yat-sen University also presented their research project entitled “Tourists’ decision making in movement behaviours within the Greater Bay Area – A time budget perspective”, the statement added.

The statement noted that the institute is undertaking an important role in helping with the development of the GBA by aiding the tourism and hospitality industry in the area to prosper.
