Global COVID-19 tally tops 400 million: report

The world's COVID-19 tally has exceeded 400 million today, according to the US-based real-time statistical reference website worldometers.info

At 3:45 p.m. today (Macau time), the global novel coronavirus tally stood at 401,288,380. The COVID-19 death toll amounted to 5,783,182, or 1.4 percent of the total number of officially recorded cases. 

Based on the current world population of 7.925 billion, according to worldometers.info, about 5 percent of the planet's people have been infected with the virus. 

The United States, Brazil and India continued to top the list of countries with the highest number of both COVID-19 cases and fatalities. 

Macau's COVID-19 tally has remained at 79 for weeks. No novel coronavirus deaths have been recorded in Macau, which confirmed its first COVID-19 case in January 2020. Macau, which has barred foreign nationals without the right of abode here from entering the city, has a population of about 680,000. 

Meanwhile, Hong Kong government broadcaster RTHK reported this morning that the city of 7.5 million inhabitants is set to reach a new daily record of over 1,100 new cases today.
