SJM Resorts recently hosted a sugar-blowing and rod puppet workshop experiences at “GLP Arte” at Grand Lisboa Palace (GLP) in Cotai.
The integrated resort operator said in a recent statement that the sugar-blowing workshop was led by Hong Kong artist To Wun, aka “Sugarman”, who is dedicated to preserving and modernising the traditional art, which has a history of over 600 years and was inscribed on the Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong in 2014. He pioneered the use of “plant-based, sugar-free ingredients to align with contemporary health-conscious trends”, according to the statement.
During the workshop, To demonstrated essential techniques such as sugar boiling, kneading and blowing, the statement said.
Meanwhile, the statement noted that seasoned puppeteer Tang Wen Yuan conducted the rod puppetry workshop, enabling participants to learn more about the origins of the millennium-old craft through puppet collections, tracing its historical evolution, teaching basic techniques and hands-on puppet crafting. Participants also received a “Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Certificate”.
According to the statement, rod puppetry dates back to the Han Dynasty and flourished during the Tang and Song Dynasties. The statement added that it was inscribed on the Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China (2008) and the Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong (2014).
Together, the two workshops aimed to provide participants with “a deeper appreciation for the artistic and cultural significance of these cherished intangible heritage practices”, the statement said.
