The Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested a local man for drug taking and drug-trafficking on Tuesday, PJ spokesman Leng Kam Long said during a special press conference yesterday.

Leng identified the suspect as a 33-year-old designer surnamed Ma.

According to Leng, based on a tip-off, the Judiciary Police launched an investigation and identified Ma as the suspect engaged in cross-border drug trafficking.

PJ officers intercepted him when he was entering the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) Macau checkpoint and immediately stopped him for a search in a nearby car park.

Leng said that PJ officers first seized a small packet containing 0.65 grams of ketamine and two banknotes with suspected drug residue from him, adding that they also discovered 2,700 patacas suspected to be drug proceeds, while a plastic bag that had drug residue in it was found in his car.

Leng also said that the investigation indicated that Ma was smuggling drugs internally.

The Judiciary Police took Ma to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre for examination, where a foreign object was discovered inside his body, Leng said, adding that Ma spontaneously expelled seven small packets of ketamine from his anus, inside condoms and weighing around 18.06 grams in total.

Leng said that the 18.71 grams of ketamine has an estimated street value of around 18,700 patacas.

Ma confessed to purchasing the drugs in Hong Kong and smuggling them into Macau, intending to use some of the drugs for personal consumption and to sell the remainder, Leng said, adding that Ma’s urine test returned a positive result for drug use.

Ma was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of drug use and drug trafficking.
