The grassroots New Macau Association (NMA) petitioned the Commission Against Corruption (CCAC) yesterday to further investigate alleged “breakfast bribery” on election day, in accordance with the Legislative Assembly Election Law.
On September 17, this year’s Legislative Assembly polling day, a video circulated on social media which appeared to show an old woman receiving a free breakfast provided by the Macau General Association of Neighbourhood Unions (commonly known as Kai Fong) and saying that she was allegedly asked to vote for the Progress Promotion Union (UPP), No. 2 on the ballot, headed by Ho Ion Sang, Kai Fong’s vice-president.
When asked by a reporter about the alleged election-day “breakfast bribery”, the video shows an apparent Kai Fong member telling a reporter later that day that her organisation was often giving free breakfasts to elderly residents, not just on polling day.
