A local man spent 500 patacas on a MACAUpass card that he found in a convenience store in February, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference on Monday.
The 54-year-old suspect surnamed Ng is a local resident who told the police that he is self-employed.
According to Wong, the victim on February 11 topped up his or her MACAUpass card in a convenience store in Rua da Doca do Lam Mau. The victim, whose gender was not revealed by the police, accidentally left the card behind.
When the victim returned to the store after realising that he or she had left the card with a stored value of 900 patacas behind, it had vanished so the victim reported the case to the police, Wong said.
Thanks to the store’s CCTV footage, the police discovered that Ng stole the MACAUpass card and left the scene. Questioned by the police, Ng admitted that he stole the card and spent 500 patacas of its stored value. When Ng found out that the card had been suspended by its owner, he discarded it, Wong said.
Ng was transferred to the Public Prosecution Office (MP) on Saturday, facing a charge of theft by finding.
