A team of students from the University of Macau (UM) has recently won the Grand Prize in the “MetaBCI Innovative Application Development” category at the World Robot Contest 2025 – Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) Controlled Robot Contest, according to a statement on the public university’s website yesterday.

According to chatbot Poe, the contest was held in Beijing on August 16-20.

The statement noted that the contest focuses on brain-computer interface technology, which allows people to control machines with their brains. Participants included teams from leading universities and research institutes worldwide such as Tsinghua University (THU) and the University of British Columbia (UBC), according to the statement.

UM’s winning team was led by Li Haobo, a third-year student in electrical and computer engineering. The statement said he has competed in the contest for the past three years. The team was guided by Wan Feng, associate professor in the UM Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Faculty of Science and Technology.

Their winning project is a system that uses electroencephalogram (EEG) to monitor a person’s emotions and psychological state. The statement noted that the system could be used in smart homes or for mental health monitoring.

The World Robot Contest is a large competition that began in 2015. The statement said it has had over 500,000 participants from more than 20 countries and regions, sometimes called the ‘Olympics of robotics.’ This year, UM sent 31 students to compete in various categories of the contest.
